A
brief History

of the First Tennis Court, 1960

The club was founded in 1951 as a Tennis Club.
We rented ground from the Crinion family and
laid two grass courts. Pat Meade was our first
Tennis Captain.

Tennis Court, 1960

In 1963 the McKeever Estate was taken over by
the Irish Land Commission and we rented seven
acres in order to form our pitch and putt course.
In 1967 we got the opportunity to purchase the
property for £700. We laid two tennis
courts in tarmac and built our clubhouse. Kevin
O' Brien was our first pitch and putt captain.
The
layout of the course has changed very little
since 1967 and we now have six flood lit, all-weather
tennis courts.
In
2003 the club set out plans to further develop
the clubhouse and its facilities at a
cost of €220,000 which it hopes to have
completed by early 2004. The executive committee
wanted to develop it's clubhouse facilities
to cater for a growing interest in the utilization
of them, and in order to bring them up to more
acceptable standards for equivalent sports clubs.
This involves carrying out work on the existing
building, a new building extension and services.
The major part of the development is centered
on the re-development of the changing rooms
and related facilities, and on the kitchen and
catering area.

Some
members are very competitive in both sports
and have brought honour to the club especially
Sean Downes who has won four All Ireland
titles in pitch and putt. The clubhouse
with its bar is a great meeting point after
our games, win or lose where many a tale
and a joke are shared. The club has come
a long way since the humble beginnings of
1951. |
